Tire Changeover Vs. Tire Swap

There are two ways to change your tires for the season: a tire changeover or a tire swap. The service you need is based on whether you have one or two sets of wheels that fit your tires.

A tire changeover requires the use of one set of wheels and two sets of tires. It entails keeping your existing wheels while only replacing the rubber tires. This is the less expensive option at first because you will not need to purchase a new set of wheels.

Tire swaps involve using two sets of wheels and two sets of tires, meaning both the tires and wheels are replaced as a complete unit. Unlike a standard changeover, this process is quicker and requires less labour each season. As a result, it can save you money in the long run and make seasonal tire changes more convenient and efficient.

Trail Tire offers tire swapping as well as expert seasonal tire changeover services. Our certified technicians will change over your tires and inspect them. Lastly, they will advise you on the general condition of your tires and advise how long your set will last.

Winter Tires vs All-Season/Summer Tires

Winter and all-season tires both have qualities that make them suited for certain seasons but not for others. It’s vital to choose tires that are appropriate for the season to improve your safety and get the best tire performance.

Winter Tires

Winter tires have a softer rubber compound that keeps them flexible in cold conditions. The soft compound gives the tire better traction. Furthermore, the pliable rubber improves stopping distance on ice and snow. Winter tires also have larger tread depths (2 mm deeper than summer tires), which prevent snow buildup and improve grip and traction on snowy surfaces.

The tread pattern is also designed to channel snow and slush while expelling water. This also improves traction and stopping distance. Compared to all-season tires, winter tires give you better grip, control, and steering on snowy roads, making it easier and safer to drive.

Summer/All-Season Tires

All-season and summer tires perform best in temperatures above 7°C. Unlike winter tires, which are made with a softer rubber that remains flexible in the cold, all-season and summer tires are crafted with a harder rubber compound that is specifically designed to handle warm weather conditions. As temperatures rise, the rubber in these tires maintains its integrity, providing reliable performance without wearing down too quickly. In contrast, using all-season or summer tires in colder temperatures can cause the rubber to harden even further, reducing traction and potentially compromising safety.

All-season and summer tires’ tread patterns are optimized for wet and dry roads, offering improved handling, enhanced grip, and shorter braking distances during the spring and summer months. By switching to the right tires at the right time, you’ll not only improve your vehicle’s performance but also extend the life of your tires. When you get your seasonal tire changeover at Trail Tire, you can feel confident to drive more safely throughout every season.

When to Get Your Expert Seasonal Tire Changeover

Once the temperature dips to 7°C or below, it is time to change to winter tires. At this temperature, winter tires improve vehicle stability and grip.

You will need certified winter tires (tires bearing the 3PMS symbol) to drive through mountain passes in British Columbia from October 1st to March 31st. Although it is not required in some provinces, driving with a 3PMS certified tire is always preferable for safety and peace of mind.

When the temperature in the spring begins to regularly reach above 7°C, then it’s time to switch to your all-season or summer tires.
