Winter Driving Checklist: Be Ready for the Road Ahead

As winter sets in, we want you to stay safe on the road. That means ensuring your vehicle is properly equipped to handle the challenges of cold weather, snow, and ice. At Trail Tire, we know how unpredictable Canadian winters can be. That’s why we offer a full suite of services to help get your vehicle winter-ready.

Whether you’re commuting through frosty city streets or heading out on a snow-covered highway, taking time to check key components of your vehicle can make all the difference. Below is our comprehensive Winter Driving Checklist to help you prepare for the season with confidence. You can visit your local Trail Tire for your winter driving preventative maintenance.

1. Winter Tire Check: Grip Matters

Winter tires will provide better traction, handling, and braking performance in cold, snowy, and icy conditions. Make sure to get your winter tires installed once the weather starts to reach below 7°C. Before you get your tires installed, it’s important to make sure they’re in good shape.

At Trail Tire, we’ll inspect your tires for:

  • Tread Depth: Your tread depth should be at least 5/32” to work properly on snow and ice. If your winter tire tread is reaching near or below the recommended level, we can suggest a new winter tire for your vehicle.
  • Tire Pressure: Cold weather causes air pressure to drop. Underinflated tires can reduce fuel efficiency and increase the risk of a blowout. Our Trail Tire technician will  inflate your tires to the recommended PSI.
  • Tire Condition: Cracks, uneven wear, or bulges are signs that your tires may need replacing. We’ll check to ensure that your tires are in good condition before installing them.

2. Cooling System Check: Keep Your Engine from Freezing

Your vehicle’s cooling system plays a critical role in maintaining engine temperature—especially in winter. If your antifreeze is old or your cooling components are worn, you could be at risk for engine overheating or freezing. Our technicians will inspect your cooling system to ensure that it is functioning properly. This preventative maintenance can save you from serious engine damage and expensive repairs when the temperatures drop.

Our cooling system service includes:

  • Checking radiator fluid levels and quality
  • Inspecting hoses and belts for cracks or wear
  • Ensuring antifreeze is at the proper concentration and protection level

3. Battery Test: Don’t Get Stranded

One of the most common causes of winter breakdowns is a dead battery. Cold weather makes it harder for your battery to produce enough power to start your engine. If your battery is old or weak, it could stop working when you need it most.

We’ll test your battery to:

  • Confirm it’s holding a charge
  • Check that the terminals are clean and connections are secure
  • Ensure it’s properly mounted to avoid vibration damage

If your battery is near the end of its lifespan, we can recommend and install a replacement so you’re not left stranded in the cold.

4. Windshield Wipers and Washer Fluid: Clear Vision is Safe Driving

Winter driving often means dealing with snow, slush, and road salt—all of which can severely reduce visibility. Worn-out wipers or low washer fluid can quickly become a safety hazard.

During our inspection, we will:

  • Check the condition of your wiper blades and recommend replacements if needed
  • Top off your windshield washer reservoir with winter-grade fluid that won’t freeze
  • Ensure your washer nozzles are functioning properly

Trail Tire Tip: Consider upgrading to winter-specific wiper blades designed to handle ice and snow buildup more effectively.

5. Light Inspection: Be Seen, Be Safe

With shorter days and longer nights, working headlights and taillights are vital for both visibility and safety. In fact, during a Canadian winter, your lights will likely be on most of the time you’re driving.

When you come in for winter preventative maintenance, our team will check:

  • Headlights, brake lights, taillights, and signal lights
  • Lens clarity (cloudy or yellowed lenses reduce light output)
  • Proper alignment of headlights to avoid blinding other drivers

Burned-out bulbs are quick and easy to replace, but they make a big difference in your safety on the road.
